Home Security Advice

If you own your own residential property, you will know how important home security is. Preventing burglars from gaining entry to your home should not mean turning your home into a high security prison; if you follow some simple steps you can make sure you prevent anyone from even attempting to gain access to your home and your belongings.  Try to look at your home through the burglar’s eyes; most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves and 20{ef6a2958fe8e96bc49a2b3c1c7204a1bbdb5dac70ce68e07dc54113a68252ca4} don’t need to used forced entry, they make use of windows and doors left open. A good security company would do so first before recommending the ideal security solution for your space. Where guns become necessary and you search where to buy 223 ammo along with them, security companies understand what to do. So, it’s either you hire them or go-ahead to apply the shared tips below.

Windows

30{ef6a2958fe8e96bc49a2b3c1c7204a1bbdb5dac70ce68e07dc54113a68252ca4} of criminals gain entry into a property via a window of some description. Even small windows such as fanlights or skylights can be vulnerable as a burglar only needs a gap the size of his head to gain entry into a property. Visible locks on windows can act as a good deterrent as it openly displays that the property is secure and will obviously take some effort to get into. Of all the locks available, casement locks are the best for windows. These locks make it impossible to open a window without the correct key. Other types of good window locks include; fanlight locks that use a metal bolt to secure the metal arm used to open the window; Sash window locks that lock the two parts of the window together, making it impossible to slide the window open from the outside. The general advice with windows is to make sure you close all windows when you leave your property, and to make sure you have good locks fitted and use them! Another point to make here is that most insurance policies will be void if window locks are not used.

Doors

Make sure all doors are securely closed and locked when you leave the property. This sounds very obvious, but a surprisingly large amount of opportunist thieves just walk straight into a property via an unlocked door. All exterior doors should be solidly made and be at least 44mm thick. Also make sure that all front doors and back doors are fitted with a five-lever mortice deadlock. Glass panels in and around doors are an obvious weak point so make sure it is reinforced laminated glass, and a good recommendation is that you use frosted or opaque glass wherever possible. This reduces the risk of someone peering through your door to see what lovely good may await on the inside. Patio doors and French doors are a more specialised affair, however there are many high quality locks available so consult your local locksmith or French door fitter who will be able to supply and fit the best options available. For particularly vulnerable members of society, such as the elderly, fitting a chain to the front door is a very good idea as it enables you to see and speak to who is at the door before you fully open up. Make sure you buy a good quality chain and have it fitted properly to make sure it can withstand and attempts to break past it.
